Where the prices come from

Every price on this site comes from the standard charges file the hospital itself must publish under federal law (45 CFR Part 180), with the date the hospital published it.

What we show

• 150 hospitals in Houston, Dallas–Fort Worth, San Antonio, Austin and McAllen, and 16 common outpatient procedures.
• The hospital’s cash price, its list price, and what insurers pay, as the hospital published them.
• Prices are checked every week; when a hospital publishes a new file, the new prices replace the old ones.
• Values that can’t be a real facility price are left off. A cash price that is simply the list price is shown and marked.

What’s not here

• Doctors’ and radiologists’ fees (billed separately).
• Independent imaging centers and labs (not covered by the hospital rule).
• Hospitals we don’t have prices for yet: see data status.
